Quick update, June 27, 2018: Addiction Professional calling for greater attention to spiritual issues in recovery.
One thing that is deeply disappointing to us is the absence of support for young people in experiencing the spiritual issues of life in almost every therapeutic program that is not an arm of a specific religious body. Those programs usually proselytize participants into their specific brand of religion.
Most non-sectarian programs ignore this. Some attempt to cover that base by referring to the "higher power" concept of the twelve step fellowships. That is better than nothing but in our opinion does not go far enough. Some turn to Native American/ American Indian lore to cover this base. We welcome respect shown to our true Native Americans, but in terms of our real concern here, this seems to be a bit of a red herring.
